Abrams produced, co-wrote and directed the movie, which went on to become the highest-grossing movie of 2015, and the 10th highest-grossing film of 2016, making over $2 billion at the global box office by the end of its theatrical run.
However, Star Wars came back even bigger and better in 2015's Star Wars: The Force Awakens, which introduced new characters into the series, while also bringing back some old familiar faces. In 90s and 00s, the trilogy got three prequels, and although fans tore them apart, those movies remain a part of the franchise. That first epic space opera took moviegoers to a galaxy far, far away, launching two more films and a massive amount of merchandise. When the first Star Wars movie premiered in 1977, it was likely that no one involved expected the film to launch a franchise that would still be going strong in 2019.
